Sodium benzoate is a commonly used, safe, and effective antimicrobial preservative in cosmetics and skincare products—such as cleansers, lotions, and creams—that helps inhibit the growth of bacteria and mold. It is most often used in water-based, leave-on or rinse-off formulations at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 1.0%, and it performs best in acidic conditions with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5.
Sodium Benzoate is not a full spectrum preservative. It requires the use of another preservative such as Potassium Sorbate to provide full protection against mold, fungi, yeast and bacteria.
