Whipped Body Butters
Whipped Body Butters are easy and fun to make, and even better to use to keep your skin moisturized.
A stand mixer (Kitchenaid, Cuisinart, etc.) works best, but an electric hand mixer will also work. Do not use an immersible hand blender similar to what you're using to get your soap to trace. This type of mixer/blender will not get the job done.
Whipped Body Butters typically follow a formula of 75% hard oils and butters, and 25% liquid oils. You can choose any combination you like. Melt your hard oils in a microwave safe container in 30 second bursts. Add your liquid oils to your melted hard oils and stir to combine. Now put that mixture into the freezer. You want your oils to become a soft/solid so that they will whip. If your oils are liquid, they will not whip but you will get a lovely splatter pattern all over your walls! Check your oils regularly as frozen solid oils will not whip either.
When your oil mixture is fairly solid, you can start whipping. Whip on high speed and your oils will whip up similar to whipping cream. The volume will increase because the whipping is adding air to the oils, making them light and fluffy. I whip my oils for about 10 minutes total, stopping every couple of minutes to scrape down the side of the bowl with a spatula. Once they're whipped you can add your favourite fragrance or essential oils. Be cautious of citrus essential oils as they can cause photosensitivity. This is only a problem in the warmer months when people are outside with short sleeves etc. If you want to colour your creation you will need to tread lightly. You don't want to add to much colour as it may stain skin!
Your whipped body butter may soften and/or melt a bit if kept in a warm area. If this happens, simply pop it into the fridge to harden it back up.
